Eagles win 6 straight to advance to 4A State Tournament in Mankato

Two wins over Shakopee sends Eagles to State Tournament

Julia Goetz's one out line drive single to centerfield in the bottom of the ninth brought Molly Nelson in from third base and completed a 6-game Section tournament sweep following a first round loss and punched the Eagles' ticket to Mankato for the State Tournament next week. The Eagles beat Shakopee 5-3 in the first game Thursday and 3-2 in the deciding game.

Abby Sailer pitched all 16 innings Thursday, striking out 8 and giving up just 3 earned runs. She pitched all but one out in the Section tournament. Piper Lange had 4 hits and 2 RBI Thursday. Seven different players had RBIs in the two games. Several defensive plays helped ensure the two wins, including a diving catch in right by Lara Welter to save a run, and infield plays by Julia Goetz, Kate Zimmerman, Piper Lange and Emily Grein - including a crucial double play in the championship game on a bunt that went from Grein to Lange to Zimmerman catching the lead runner over running second base.

Earlier Section rounds

The two wins followed a tough Section 2AAAA first round 7-4 loss to Minnetonka in a rain suspended game that took two days to play, the Eagles fought back last Friday to beat Chaska 8-2 and then number one seed Chanhassen in a 6-5 thriller. Taylor Wright went 3 for 4 with a homerun and six RBI against Chaska. Abby Sailer was the winning pitcher in both games.

The Eagles now play undefeated Shakopee at 5 p.m. Thursday, May 30 at Miller Park.  The Eagles must beat Shakopee twice to win the Section 2AAAA championship. The winner advances to the AAAA State Tournament in Mankato June 6-7. The Eagles last played in the Section championship game in 2016 losing to Chanhassen.
